Stockport is a town in northwestern England. It is one of ten metropolitan boroughs of Greater Manchester, the third most populous county in England with over 2.5 million people. Stockport has a population of over 135,000 people. Stockport is part of the Greater Manchester Urban Area, a major centre of English business, commerce, entertainment, education, sports, transportation and tourism.
The major shopping areas in Stockport are The Peel Centre and Merseyway Shopping Centre, which has two floors and about 100 stores. Additionally, the Grand Central Stockport is a multi-purpose complex that features cinema, sport facilities, shops and restaurants.
Stockport has two professional sports teams. Stockport County Football Club compete in the Football League One, third division of English Football. The Sale Sharks are a rugby union team who compete in the Guinness Premiership. Both clubs play at the Edgeley Park, which has about 11,000 seating capacity.
Stockport College provides further education for students aged 16 and above, and has two campuses in town.
Stockport is home to several interesting landmarks including the Grade II structures of Stockport Viaduct and Staircase House, a historic building from the 15th century. Other notable places are historic St Mary's Church and St. Elisabeth's church.
The Stockport railway station is managed by Virgin Trains and located only few miles away from the larger Manchester Piccadilly station.
